American Masters.

An evening with the great American song writers

In the early 20th century, American musical theater was a major source for popular songs, many of which influenced blues, jazz, country, and other extant styles of popular music. The center of development for this style was in New York City, where the Broadway theatres became among the most renowned venues in the city.

The Classic City Singers are pleased to present a concert featuring three defining composers of this amazing American musical renassaince.

Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. His works include the musical comedies Kiss Me, Kate, Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady and Anything Goes, as well as songs like "Night and Day", "I Get a Kick out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". He was noted for his sophisticated, bawdy lyrics, clever rhymes, and complex forms. He was one of the greatest contributors to the Great American Songbook. Cole Porter is one of the few Tin Pan Alley composers to have written both lyrics and music for his songs.

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are universally familiar. George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public. His compositions have been used in numerous films and on television, and many became jazz standards recorded in numerous variations. Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs.

Ira Gershwin (December 6, 1896 – August 17, 1983) was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century.

With George he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", "The Man I Love" and "Someone to Watch Over Me", and the opera Porgy and Bess.

The Classic City Singers

The Classic City Singers hope to provide a relaxed professional environment for people to come and sing their favorite songs. CCA selects a theme for the show (for instance Broadway Numbers or a selection of composers) and then we work with the cast to come up with a set list that everyone is happy with. Working together we then produce a world class concert experience for our audience in a variety of venues.

In short we love music and we love to sing here at CCA. With the Classic City Singers we strive to provide an outlet for that love free of the sometimes overwhelming tasks involved in producing musical theatre. Plus we get to select from a much broader range of music!

The Classic City Singers are produced by Amy Wright and Will Leamon. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and like to stage a concert every other month. Please see the 2010 Schedule for this year's concerts! For more information please contact us at help@classiccityarts.com.
